Anyone Shower with their Feathered Friend?

Question:

I bought one of those shower perches, and I do put my cockatoo in the shower every once in a while, but the main use I bought it for was to stick on the window.  It has large suction cups and legs for stability which makes it a great window perch, and it is far enough away from the edges so she can’t chew on the wood. — www.donsworld.org www.claybornesamishfurniture.com Because I care – this message has been scanned with Norton Anti Virus on the way out!

not for a bugie, Dar

Most budgies perfer to bathe in a small saucer. But, I would imagine that they would like a shower just as well. I usually don’t make a habit of bathing with my birds simply because they are happy with mist baths, and I worry about the scents of soaps and other bathroom scented junk. One note (this happened to my poor husband), if you are a male (you aren’t, but there are men reading this, no offense :) ), make sure you have a perch for the bird to perch on. You don’t want your bird choosing his own perches when you are naked. You should have heard my husband screech though (kind of a funny, but not so funny at all situation) when our tiel sunk her 8 claws into him. Just a friendly warning. -Catherine-

And what was BENTly doing to have his body part in a "Perching mode" when the teil selected it as a perch? Dave — Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).

That’s bad, but goodl!!!  I’m still laughing. Regards

My macaw will only bathe when I do. He sits on the shower door until I finish my bath and then I bring him in on my hand and he sits then and does the ususal bathing motions until I get tired of holding him or I run out of hot water. He seems to prefer slightly warm (to me) water. glenn – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I keep seeing these shower perches for sale.  The idea really appeals to me, > but I have a few concerns.  I can see a bigger bird perhaps being okay and > enjoying a shower with a human, but I’m wondering if a little Budgie could > withstand a shower. > I have a full-size tub and shower so I could place the perch at the end out > of the water stream.  And I don’t tend to take a scalding shower – just on > the hot side of warm.  But I’m wondering about the steam and the chance > splash of soap or shampoo that might hit the bird. > Any advice?  Anyone else shower with their bird?  Is it a little bird? > Thanks, > Jessica > (Cage is ordered, looking at birds Saturday, should have both by next > weekend! My lutino ‘tiel hen, Woodstock enjoys a good drenching in the shower w/me now and then (just did today, s’matteroffact). She just flies in when she wants to, perching on the curtain rod. She’ll sometimes get impatient and land on my head before I can reach up to her. I’ll hold her on my forearm w/my back to the shower head, bouncing spray off my shoulder so she doesn’t get a direct blast. I just gotta be alert for when she wants "seconds", and tries to hop on my head when it’s full of shampoo lather. My pearly ‘tiel hen, Hobbes used to do this, but lately prefers a bath. Most all my other ‘tiels use the big flat plastic birdbath (sans pedestal) I set on top of the cage. My budgies like a "dew bath" in endive lettuce hung from their tree…I spray them down w/a plant sprayer while they do this. – DW

Hi Jessica,   Buddy, our Jenday Conure showers with us all the time. He loves it. He’ll perch on our hand and then run in and out of the shower stream. He’s about a foot long so he’s not a gigantic bird but he’s certainly bigger than a Budgie. I would try a mister on a Budgie first. We always wash up first before letting Buddy in. We leave him on the counter and he knows enough to wait until he sees a hand sticking out of the shower before hopping on. Soap and shampoo probably isn’t good for any bird.

I shower first, then bring my Sun Conure in.  He sits in his converted lunch box bird carrier waiting his turn. I have to hold him on my arm.  He closes his eyes and obviously enjoys it. I try to avoid a strong water stream. Just like a tropical rainforest. Jim

Response:

When we do this with our small birds we just let the water hit us in the back, and let the spray shower the bird. The will let you know if they are enjoying it. Some times they have wanted to stay in till I started to run out of hot water, <G>

I keep seeing these shower perches for sale.  The idea really appeals to me, but I have a few concerns.  I can see a bigger bird perhaps being okay and enjoying a shower with a human, but I’m wondering if a little Budgie could withstand a shower. Any advice?  Anyone else shower with their bird?  Is it a little bird? Thanks, Jessica (Cage is ordered, looking at birds Saturday, should have both by next weekend! Yay!)

Jessica, Saffie (my Green Cheek Conure) loves to share the shower. (She is larger than a Budgie but smaller than a Cockatiel.) I don’t have a shower perch, she sits on the curtain rod and I don’t let her get wet until I’m done. Her preference is to sit in the spray that comes off my head while I shower. I hold her on my finger and she closes her eyes and gets soaked! She has only done this a few times, when my boyfriend has let her out of the cage while I was getting ready for work. I have an adapter on my kitchen sink spout that sprays the water like a shower. I find it more convenient to let her shower in the sink. I put a stopper in the drain and turn the water on low. She plays under the spray until the sink gets deep enough with water for her to dip her entire head and body under, then she climbs on my finger so I can lift her out of the sink. As for temperature, Saffie likes her shower anywhere from slightly cool (to the touch) to warm. Sunny (my Sun Conure) likes his bath cool to the touch! (He only likes to bathe in the water dish… And only after I’ve put fresh water in it!) I can’t answer your concerns about steam as my bathroom seldom steams up. Jan
