Greenbrier,WV trip

Question:

my wife and i are going on vacation to west virginia at the end of May.i want to do some canoeing and mtn biking.we have our own canoe and bikes.what i want to know is if there are som areas along the Greenbrier River where we could leave our bikes downriver, drive up,canoe down and then bike back up.we are from Florida, but are not novice canoers, but are not experts either.we would like to hit some rapids, but nothing serious.we did some canoeing last year on the Big South Fork at the end of May.we will also be looking for a nice campground in the area, something quiet and primitive(bathroom/shower would be nice though).any advice, opinions,or suggestions would be appreciated. thanks,Jared

Response:

the Greenbrier River Trail would work pretty well for that. It is a converted rail line that follows the Greenbrier River from Caldwell, just out of Lewisburg, about 80 miles to Cass. The breauty of this trail is beyond words. There use to be bike shops on both ends that provide shuttle service for bikes or canoes. Another idea would be contact Robert Hood, the director of Camp Greenbrier in Alderson. This is a fantastic boys camp celebrating 100 years of continuing operation this summer. I’m sure you could leave cars, bikes, canoes or anything else there and offer a senior counselor a "bribe" to pick you up. We use to do it all the time whene I was a counselor there. Please let me know how turns out.                               Ralph Mitchell
