Himaylan litter box problem

Question:

> My brother and his wife have two Himaylayan cats > about 7 years old each a male and female ( neutered and spade). > Rambo the large male has started urinating outside his litter > box in such places as the bathroom sink and cardboard boxes. > He has also defacated in a cardboad box. > Their liiter box is clean and emptied daily. > They took him to the Vet for a checkup and he does not have > a bladder infecion. > Anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem could be ? > Could he be getting senile at 7 or 8 years of age ? > Thanks…Neil

Polycystic kidney disease is a disease common to Himalayans.  This defect may cause no problem at all or can lead to progressive renal failure. In other cases, the cysts can become infected causing a pyelonephritis that may be treatable. It may be difficult to identify cats with this disease because symptoms are not usually obvious until the disease progresses. Ultrasonography may be necessary for diagnosis because x-rays are insensitive methods of confirming cystic disease and blood test results are usually unremarkable unless the cat has renal insufficiency. The problem may just be a behavioral issue.  However, the best rule of thumb is to rule out all medical possibilities, first. http://maxshouse.com/feline_eliminative_behavior.htm#Feline Eliminative Behavior http://maxshouse.com/behavior__training.htm#Elimination Problems in Cats http://maxshouse.com/behavior__training.htm#Inappropriate Urination http://maxshouse.com/behavior__training.htm#Environmental Factors Contributing to Inappropriate Urination http://maxshouse.com/behavior__training.htm#Recommendations Good luck. My brother and his wife have two Himaylayan cats about 7 years old each a male and female ( neutered and spade). Rambo the large male has started urinating outside his litter box in such places as the bathroom sink and cardboard boxes. He has also defacated in a cardboad box. Their liiter box is clean and emptied daily. They took him to the Vet for a checkup and he does not have a bladder infecion. Anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem could be ? Could he be getting senile at 7 or 8 years of age ? Thanks…Neil

Response:

Just a quick check that your brother and his wife haven’t suddenly changed the type of cat litter they use or that they have not started using a litter deodorant or strong disinfectant. Any of these things can put some cats off using their tray. Marian      / /           Somalis —–    = ~ ~ =         ^              the snooty agoutis
