? Urinated on Bed

Question:

My one year old mixed breed male neutered dog urinated on my bed the other morning. He hasn’t had an ‘accident’ in the house in about 6 months. He had been let out to do his business earlier.  He didn’t seem sick or upset or agitated. As a matter of fact, he urinated in the spot he’d been sleeping in for the past 2 weeks since my husband’s been out of town on business.  I had gone out for a jog as I do every morning and when I got back I found the wet spot. He is always gated in my kitchen whenever I leave him alone in the house except for the 30 minutes every morning I go out to jog. Any ideas? Thanks- Sue

Not sure what to tell you about the peeing on the bed but out of curiosity why don’t you take your dog for a jog with you? Donna — R and D Ryan http://www3.sympatico.ca/ryan7

Donna- Indi doesn’t ‘get’ what jogging is. For some reason, when you start to run, he thinks he should grab the leash in his teeth and play tug of war…or pull you along. He gets absolutely out of control. I walk him though….at least 30 minutes a day and he never does the leash thing then. Sue

Could he be upset or confused because your husband is out of town.  Is this the side your husband sleeps on? My dog did this once after my husband corrected her (which he hardly EVER does). She had never done anything like this before or since. It was probably the most curious thing she has ever done.  The "peeing" behavior in my opinion is related to communication.  (Mine follow each other and pee in the same spot as the other ones). Put a mattress pad on the bed but I’m guessing it won’t happen again. They do miss people and have few ways of communicating or resolving this. If you have any thoughts as to why he did this, let me know. Yes – I bet he has a bladder infection or perhaps bladder stones that cause him to lose control unexpectedly. See the vet with a urine sample that is less than an hour old (that has NOT been refridgerated, by the way) and have him checked out. For a normally housetrained dog to suddenly lose that is worth having checked out. Do it soon – it will happen again and it could be that antibiotics could fix it all. Just curious- why "not refridgerated". Janet Gunn
