Air Returns

Question:

I had a home built about a year and a half ago.  Wh have a single story house with a full basement.  The house is a little over 2400sq feet with  1200 main floor + 1200 basement.  We are in the slow process of finishing the basement.  When we built the house I had the heat/air ducts run throughout the basement.  The sub-contractor that did the work did not mention anything about installing air returns in the basement.  On the main floor we have two air returns both in the same hallway.  Should I install an air return in the basement?  I assume you can have either not enough or to many air returns, but is two on the main floor enough for the whole house now that we are starting to finish and use the basement? Thanks, Steve

Response:

Gee, I have air returns in each room. I would say you need at least one return in the basement.  Basically, in order to blow air into a room, you need somewhere for the "old" air to go.  The air return provides that passage. I don’t think you can have too many air returns.  If there are "too many", you just have less air going into each air return register. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Should I install an air return > in the basement?

Yes Yes Yes!!!  Have a cold air return in the basement on the floor and running up through the studs.  Our HVAC guys forgot to put one in and when they came back to do it, they put it in the ceiling because the basement was finished.  In the winter the warm air in the basement goes right in the cold air return.  It’s cold down there in the winter and really cold with the AC on in the summer. adrian – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I had a home built about a year and a half ago.  Wh have a single story house > with a full basement.  The house is a little over 2400sq feet with  1200 main > floor + 1200 basement.  We are in the slow process of > finishing the basement.  When we built the house I had the heat/air ducts run > throughout the basement.  The sub-contractor that did the work did not mention > anything about installing air returns in the basement.  On the main floor we > have two air returns both in the same hallway.  Should I install an air return > in the basement?  I assume you can have either not enough or to many air > returns, but is two on the main floor enough for the whole house now that we > are starting to finish and use the basement? > Thanks, > Steve
