Becoming an independent travel agent

Question:

I am considering becoming an independent travel agent.  Does anyone have any suggestions, warnings, etc. Arlinda Henry

Response:

What do you mean an independent travel agent? There is something in the industry known as an independent contractor. That is a person who is affiliated with a travel agency but brings in their own clients. They are allowed to do business with whomever they pleased. They can’t run tickets from their homes and must produce a certain amount of business to receive certain travel benefits.   Be careful of ads to become an independent travel agent. I have been in the business for 25 years, have completed numerous courses, including my Certified Travel Consultant (CTC) which is considered equivalent to a Masters in Travel, and still go to seminars whenever time allows. Getting a computer that is hooked up to an agency does not make you an independent travel agent. What you are really doing is referrels. Look into this before you get involved in a situation that is being looked at very carefully from those that control this industry. There’s alot going on now that is on the edge of illegal activities.            Susan Zellea/CTC/Magnum Travel

I have been an outside travel agent for many years ago.  I began because I love to travel, armchair or in real life. And researching an exotic location is still an exciting challenge. However, be aware that for the most part, it’s a thankless job, with many many hours of paperwork for very little compensation. Sometimes, when a client cancels down the road, you can actually lose money! And the airlines make it harder every day. This is not to say you shouldn’t do it… just be aware of the down side before making a decision.
