Desperate for work at home job for stay at home moms!

Question:

I think you need to think about what you are good at and what you like to do and start your own business.  There are a lot of good marketing books in the library on how to market yourself doing whatever you want… My partner quit work at a large corporation (he was on an onsite hardware technician making about 24.00 an hour) to be a stay at home dad.  He started marketing himself immediately as a contractor to various business in the neighborhood, simply by running a search on qwestdex for businesses that did what he does – dropping by, introducing himself and leaving some information.  Now, he works regularly with 3 or 4 businesses, still gets business from word of mouth customers, and makes 3 times as much as he did working for someone else.   Since we aren’t married he pays for his own health insurance, but he shopped around and got a pretty good deal for about 90.00 a month single coverage. He has to pay his own taxes, but hey, there are a lot more writeoffs now. What are you good at?  What do you like to do?  I am a very busy corporate female and I know that there are a million things I would definitely pay someone a reasonable amount for if I knew they existed.  Personal concierge, for one.  I can’t find someone for under 25.00 an hour to run my personal errands that I need to have done.  I would pay someone 15.00 an hour.  I make okay money, but 25.00 an hour?  Maybe you could think about lowering rates and playing concierge to middle income working women until you built up a clientele. I did work as a medical transcriptionist when my daughter was young. It’s not hard work, but you need to be a really great speller and typist, (or get some good macro’s going), and the market is pretty tight.  And you get paid piecework, which used to be about .07 per word when I was doing it. Quite honestly, if you are not working now, and your partner is supporting you but you are thinking about the future – go to the Sun Java site, download the developer’s kit, teach yourself through all the java tutorials out there, learn how to code and you can stay home and be a developer and make 60.00 an hour at the very least. If you actually sit down and teach yourself coding 6-8 hours a day for 6-8 months, you could be a developer by next year and making 60.00 at the VERY least. I am hooked on this newsgroup now!

When my babies were 2 and 4 I decided to turn my hobby into an at-home business.  This is how I did it. I sat for GMATs and GREs, applied to grad school, got accepted, went full-time for two years, then took my first choice job in the industry in which I wanted to work.  I worked full-time for a year and nearly full-time for the next three years and then, when I had learned what I needed to know, quit and started my own business. This week my children all have the flu.  In between clients (at one end of my house) I keep going and checking on them.  I’ll bill out $400 today. My children are now 10, 8 and 2.  Don’t underestimate the value of a good long-term plan. Wendy Marsden, CPA

Whatever ANYONE does who wishes to work at home, NEVER pay any money for the privilege, all those are simply scams, in fact that is HOW to detect a sure scam. They are selling you crap at extravagant prices. The only work-at-home I have heard of is transcription, telemarketing, typing, teaching music, and soldering electronic subassemblies or variations on bookkeeping, unless you start your own business. I keep running across moms who are doing transcription work from home so they can work and be at home.  Have you looked into that? -Aula
