Harness question to Alex (was Re: Pet Pics)

Question:

Ok I was hoping I was just reading you wrong <G>. If you want to see if a harness would be possible, it’s not hard. If you can hold the bird, and run your fingers along their back, under the wings and such, and they will let you, then it would probably work. We are both doing this with our New B&G, for just this reason. Then when we go to put a harness on him it should be a snap.   The baby monitor was the best $45 I ever spent. It makes me feel a lot better being able to hear what they are up to no matter where I am. I like to leave the Macaw out when we are home, but used to have to lock him up if I wanted to go outside or out to the shop. Now I don’t have to lock him up and can feel safe. Like I said though if your going to get one, get the 900mhz model. Well worth the difference.

Oh yah they make them in all sizes. The package has a picture of a Cockatoo, on it and for a long time I was sure it must have been a stuffed bird. <G>   We tried with our BCC and Tiel, and gave up. They would not let us put one on them. The one time we got one on the BCC he laid there on his back terrified. Then we got the B&G, whole different story. Since he was very tame, he let me put it on first try. If your bird is very young and very tame you might be able to get one on them.   I would never use one to try to keep a bird on a cage though if that’s what you mean? For ours I bought one of those baby monitors. When I am in the back yard or in the back of the house where the PC is, I can listen to what they are doing in the living room. If I hear one fly down I go out to see what’s up. Works real well. A couple times I have even left a walkie talkie on next to the couch. Then I can talk to the Conure if he starts screaming, When he hears my voice he will stop screaming and talk back to me. If you want to go this route, pay a little extra and get one of the 900mhz models, they are well worth the few bucks extra for how well they work. The things I won’t do for my birds <BG> — For E-mail remove the "NS"

My sun is a little wiggleworm tho…now that I think of it, I doubt it would be possible to harness that little bundle of energy. >   I would never use one to try to keep a bird on a cage though if that’s > what you mean?

Not really, although looking back over my original post it seems as if it was written that way. But I was thinking more (even though I didn’t say it) of how to keep him with me so he wouldn’t get into so many things (very explorative he is). But if he had one on while at the cage, more than likely I’d see him dangling by the harness more than once–not good. > For ours I bought one of those baby monitors. I like the idea of a walkie talkie though–definitely something I might consider. I used to be able to hear them flapping down from the cages (in fact, sometimes still do, especially since I’m not far from them in the next room & the door is always open) but this little guy seems to have discovered silent flight lately. Could be that before, he wasn’t sure exactly where I was so he would call out while exploring & found me but now he knows. Thanks again. John

Alex, was just checking out your Photoshop pics and noticed your B&G was wearing a harness. Do they make those for smaller birds such as conures? My sun is getting to be a bit much to handle these days. I used to hear him flap down off the cage onto the floor (when I’m in the next room at the puter) and he’d be squawking the whole time, wobblin towards where he knew I was at. But lately, it’s happened several times…I’d be sitting in my chair at the computer & all of a sudden from the floor, I’d hear this little "er" sound–and there is Soleil the sun conure looking up at me, standing right next to the chair wheels. Scares me half to death cause I could easily roll on him & squash the little bugger. I originally thought about putting up an infrared sensor at the doorway, with a little "beep" alarm or something–that way I could hear him coming. Other than that the idea of a harness crossed my mind when I’m out of the room (their cages are open as long as I’m at home and they’re usually real good about staying on them too ‘cept not too much lately). Any ideas? John
