Question:
Hi! We’d LIKE to replace the metal heat floor vent covers in our house with plastic ones, and Imperial Manufacturing Group in Canada makes some, and we’ve replaced the 4×10 and 4×12 ones (we found those sizes at a local store), but we have three that are 4×14, and can’t find anyplace that carries or can order 4×14 plastic vent covers. We called Imperial, and they said they make them, but can’t sell them directly to customers, but when they forwarded me to their USA distribution center, they said they don’t carry them, and therefore the stores they sell to wouldn’t even be able to order them. I’ve done some searching online, and can’t find anything; Amazon has the only online hardware store that I’ve found so far, and they don’t have anything like what I’m looking for (that I could find). Can anybody give me another lead, either online, mailorder, or local to the Portland, Oregon area? Thanks! -Sandy
Response:
Have you tried Grainger and McMaster? They are probably the two largest hardware/industrial suppliers around. I believe both have web sites and 800 numbers, although they generally sell to businesses, not consumers. Bill G

Just tried both; they only have metal, and Grainger doesn’t even have 4×14. Thanks for the pointers, though! -Sandy – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Have you tried Grainger and McMaster? Go back to the wholesaler & tell them the distributors they recommended won’t stock the size you need. Maybe you can find a local company that would ‘distribute’ them for you. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Just tried both; they only have metal, and Grainger doesn’t even have 4×14. > Thanks for the pointers, though! > -Sandy > Have you tried Grainger and McMaster? There’s nothing structural about a 4"x14" hole in the floor that warm air comes through; I’m not worried about strength or decoration, I want cheap and easily cleanable, which the plastic ones are. The reason we’re replacing the metal ones is they had gotten icky; 20+ years old, and 4 kids later, they’re icky. Some of them have rusted, which is another reason why we initially looked at plastic (in addition to the <$3 price) (the rust was in the bathrooms and kitchen, of course). -Sandy

Maybe I missed something, but what was the advantage with replacing metal with plastic? I think I’d prefer steel myself, seems like it would be more structurally sound???? -v.
Response:
Another nice thing about the plastic is that you can get them in many different colours. Have you tried going to the web site of one of the Canadian Hardware stores to see if you can order them on-line. I know that I have seen the covers at Canadian Tire and at Home Hardware (sorry I don’t have web address for them though) Home Depot and Rona Warehouse also sell them in Canada. I don’t know if any of these places do on-line ordering or ship to the states. There is if the leg of the couch is on it. Or a temporary table set up for a party. Etc., etc. -v.
