How Much Is Too Much?$$$

Question:

>>but I doubt most would have the tolerance to do what I did, which is put

 >>plastic tarps in the areas of the house where they tended to piddle the  >>most. No problem ;-) plus we have hardwood, polyurethaned, floors, and a vinyl  floored "puppy room". One, or more, of us are home virtually all the time. As far as equipment, I’m the original hoarder :-0 I have about 2 dozen collars,  and currently 3 crates, not counting the one Elf, the rabbit, uses. <<And one other thing, very important to consider. Littermates are going to die pretty close in age to each other. My last 2 were Pretty hard to lose 2 so close together.>> Ooooh, GOOD point! Oops. Not only hard on me, but also hard on the two dogs,  which I understand might be more tightly bonded than normal. Cause for pause.  I’ve usually followed the 2-4 yr. age difference idea, and that’s hard enough. As an aside to some other replies, I didn’t intend to get two _identical_ in  age, and probably not even both German Shepherds. I definitely don’t want  Twinkies <g> Thanks to all for the replies. Now you should know better girl!!! If you withhold "fun" from him, you’re withholding it from you too. Just be sure to have some "fun" tonight, and then in the morning start by asking him,( from the bathroom) "Come here honey, look at my reflection in the mirror, doesn’t my skin just seem to glow?", (word of advice: take off all cleansing cream before attempting this). And then walk around for a couple of days humming to yourself, when he asks why, just say, Oh, no reason, I just feel sooooo happy. By the second week, when you start looking at dog booties, he’ll be sweatin bullets. <<Uh, oh. The knowing voice of dissention. Okay, tell me about the problems.?>>         One of the real problems with getting two puppies at once is that the dogs  will form a stronger bond with each other than they will with you.         Next, housebreaking two puppies at the same time-YIKES! Now, that’s a lotta  work–and made infinitely more dificult when dealing with more than one puppy.  Good luck in whatever you plan to do but I suggest you resup before you bring  them home–your life as you know it will never be the same.. ******Half Full, Half M.T.******                        Maureen

Wow. You’re ooooooold. ;-) heheheh.  Really, though, I bought Bolo the Rottie about 4 years ago for $300, and she came from champion bloodlines on both sides of the family, although she was sold as a pet-quality pup.  Her brother was up as show-quality, and the price on his head was $500.  I guess it really depends on where in the country (or world) you live, but the price you quoted sounds pretty… well… out there. : I was reading the NJ classified on the Net, and there is a rottie : puppy from champion bloodlines for $2300.  Isn’t that a lot of : money?  I would like to get a puppy (papillion)  next year, and I : thought puppies cost between $500 and $1200.  Am I : living in the past?   You’ll be able to find a nice papillion pup in that price range.  The rottie ad is not totally out of line for a dog that is already started on a career, from well-known bloodlines.  For example, in GSDs I would expect to pay about $3k for a 2 yr old grandson of Fanto, Jello or Uran with a SchH I. Response:

I bought a papillion two years ago for around HK$1,200…just an ordinary one you know, but very cute, healthy and cunning. The price remains more or less the same here and I believe it hasn’t soared where you live…So I think you could get one at a price far below US$150, and what you have learnt from the ad is just exorbitant.

Sounds like way too much to me, even if it  had 5 generations of health clearances behind it. I believe one could do a LOT better price-wise and get just as good a dog. That’s the kind of money I would expect to see attached to a top notch proven adult Champion dog or bitch with an outstanding pedigree, not for a puppy. Terri
