It is a personal decision. Provided your relationship with your dog is good (not a dominance struggle like some posters have mentioned) and is obedient and you want your dog in your bed, I don’t see a problem with it. Our dog has slept in our bedroom since the day we got her at the pound. First under the bed (her choice) then in a dog bed on the floor. In winter she comes up to the bed often and sleeps in one spot, by my husband’s feet, because the floor is drafty probably. In summer she prefers to be in her own bed (too much human body heat in bed). She asks to get in bed (stands by my husband’s side of the bed until she is invited) and gets off with no fuss if we want her off. She lives indoors, only going outside a couple hours a day for walks, and in the backyard when we are home. A dog kept outdoors could be pretty smelly and dirty, and for dozens of other reasons, I think dogs are better off indoors when you are not home anyway. We give our dog a bath about every two-three weeks, she is short haired, only 50lbs., very clean, so it is okay having her on the bed and the furniture as far as I am concerned.

I have read that allowing a dog to sleep in the bed causes it to start to think to much of itself & become aggressive towards the owner in an attempt slept in my bed & we were all happy & they were great & my GSD/LAB pup sleeps in his crate & we just don’t get on the same….hhmmmm go figure.
