OK, let’s examine this — I want other torus and program user’s opinions! Torus has made my yard and house flea-free. (I don’t use precor anymore now that I have torus.) I still use program because they go for walks in the parks and pick up fleas there. Now I know that most modern fleas are supposed to drop off the dog to lay their eggs in the carpet. Torus should get them if they do. BUT, what if they lay their eggs on the dog instead? I thought: if I give them program AND I spray the house and yard with Torus, I will really be safe. I solicit comments on this issue. — Jos Marlowe Sun Microsystems Laboratories

Jos, I DO use Torus with success, that’s why I believe using Torus and Program together is over kill. You assume the fleas on the dog never come in contact with the IGR on the carpet. I would argue that given how my GSD lies, rolls, etc on the floor they most likely will. I also groom him at least weekly and quickly run a flea comb over and under him at the end of brushing. I’ll also get the flea comb out if I see him repeatedly biting himself which tends to be a good indicator of a flea. This way I’m trying to minimize the discomfort poor Klaus has to put up with from these little bastards. My thinking is 1.) Spray the yard and house with Torus. 2.) Use a little human inter- vention to go after those fleas that he does pick up, say at obedience school lately. This alleviates the need/cost/consequences of dosing Klaus with another chemical. Again, IMHO with the above routine it’s unnecesary and minimizes the animals discomfort from the fleas. Keeping Klaus happy makes me happy, that’s why we all have dogs in the first place anyway isn’t it. Lastly, if a flea jumps up and bites you what is your reaction. Find and kill it, or go douse/inbibe yourself with chemicals? I guess it’s just a matter of one’s point of view and willingness to take a little more time with our animals. I think that you have a point there. The logic sounds good. We use the Torus too and even though we go to shows and, no doubt, pick up fleas, we have never had a problem. Maybe it is because even if the flea were to lay the eggs on the dog, they would fall off long before hatching. The cycle is not completed on the dog. The eggs and larvae are on the ground. OTOH, if it were necessary, I am not above using everything available (that is non-toxic) to stay flea free — I never knew how good it would feel! — we just have not found it necessary. We used Torus, went from massive fleas to none, and have not ever needed the Program. I promise that all that extra money that I didn’t spend on Program was well spent on other dog goodies! ;-) BJ

Think about it this way: with program, each flea must bite your dog before it comes into contact with the growth regulator. It could take a *long* time for all of your existing fleas to do that. I use Torus and Program together — torus to wipe out all the eggs, and program to sterilize any new fleas we might pick up on walks. Now my house and yard are completely flea free. Had I wanted even faster results, I could have used an insecticide too at the very beginning to wipe out all existing adults. I think that you killed all the adults with your yard spray, but did not kill the eggs. Use Torus. Continue to use Program. Give it 2 months after you start with Torus. — Jos Marlowe Sun Microsystems Laboratories

I’m confused, why does one need to use Program if the house and yard are treated with Torus. Torus will provide the same effect IN the house as it does outside. So, why double treat a problem?
