won't # 2 in the cat box???

Question:

One thing you could try at least while you’re gone on vacation is to keep the cats separate from each other.  The female cat would probably be relieved to be confined to the bedroom with her own box and food for a while. Karen

Response:

Here’s the deal:  We have two cats, one spayed female age 2 1/2 and one neutered male age 11 months.  Both indoor cats, both in great health. Elder cat started doing her poop outside the box occassionally shortly after we got the male.  We got a second box and this helped for quite a while.  A couple weeks ago she started doing it EVERY SINGLE TIME SHE GOES.  This is not cool.  She went to the vet this morning and we were told that it is a behavoral problem & not physical, which we had already guessed with it being so cause-and-effect.  So the vet told us to get more litter boxes and spread them throughout the house (we now have 4 for the 2 cats) since it is a domination/territorial thing.  Male cat is most definitely dominant.  They get along, but if he wants her chair, for example, all he does is bat at her and she takes off. Anyway, it is very crucial that the problem is solved, or at least improved upon within the next few weeks, because we are going on vacation (pre-paid) and our neighbors will be coming over a couple hours a day to feed, visit, and clean  after the kitties.  We really can’t expect them to clean poop off our floors every day for a week.  I know it sounds horrible, but we will have to find another home for her or the other cat if this isn’t resolved.  She is a great cat, but it just doesn’t seem that she can share a home with another cat.  It makes me sickhearted to think of it.  Believe that I have tears in my eyes right now. Someone, anyone, please give me any advice you can – I am truly desperate. Thanks- Joanie
