Young cat "challenging" older cat

Question:

I needed to add litter boxes and had limited space so I came up with a solution that has worked out really well.I have litter boxes in a closet,so I built a shelf so I could put two litter boxes above the existing ones. The shelf fits the boxes and has about nine inches extra, from the front of the box to the front of the shelf.A "catwalk" if you will. The cats jump up and use the boxes just fine. All I did was nail a 2×4 flat to the wall of each side of the closet, measuring so the top parts were about 3 inches higher than the top of the litter boxes on the floor(I use covered boxes)and then I had a 3/4 in piece of plywood cut to fit the width of the closet,in my case about 31 inches, making sure it was long enough from front to back to fit a litter box and still have enough space for a cat to walk on.I stapled a scrap piece of vinyl flooring (cut to fit) to the top of the wood so I can wipe it off in case of "spillage" and placed  the wood piece on top of the "shelf rest" that the 2×4’s created.I then set the litter boxes up,and the rest is history! I’m sure you could come up with variations on this idea to suit your circumstances. Oh,and BTW, Liz has two 10 month old kitty sisters that need a good home…   :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) Zuzu22

Well, I’ve been giving it some thought and some more possibilities came to mind. When the other cats were added, Kenda began showing signs of jealousy (chewing fur, licking bald spots) so we had to pay more attention to him. Maybe now it’s backfiring on us and now Jackie is jealous of Kenda?  Jackie usually plays with the other two cats, but with three males, I’m beginning to wonder if it isn’t also a territorial thing. We live in a decently sized two bedroom apartment, but maybe the cats don’t agree that it’s large enough for all. Maybe we should wait until we can move into a bigger house before adding more cats?  (Yes, Liz, he wants more. I told him not until we get a bigger place because there wasn’t any more room for additional litter boxes. We have four, one for each cat. He says, try using just the three biggest and see if that’s enough. If there’s no problem then four litterboxes should be enough for one or two more cats. *sigh* I’d love more cats, but if we go through with this, he HAD BETTER start helping clean.)  –  ** Diane ~ www.cjnetworks.com/~dihatsu/ ~ "We are the Cats. Resistance is futile. wants you to get more cats? I LOVE IT!!!!!!Actually another female close in age might indeed balance things a bit and give Jackie a diversion. Hmmmm…you know…if you wanted to get more cats…Liz has a pair of 10 terrific idea re female cat near the young male’s age. Squirt guns, loud no’s, hissing at him and pretending to be THE dominant one, is not working.  I’ve also tried the vanilla trick, bathing them and then putting them together, brushing them with the same brush…. *sigh* HELP!
