Are you planning on living in your house for a long time? To spend $20,000.00 on windows, you will not get your money out of the house. The replacement windows at a Home Depot or Lowes’s would be cheaper than going through the company you mentioned. Check around get other estimates. I’m a former real estate agent and I would never spend that kind of money in a house. Buyers will pay for location, location and location and nothing else. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Planning to replace about 26 windows and 2 doors in our home and have > been looking at everything from vinyl, alum clad in vinyl, wood, wood > Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? > Any comments or problems with the Thermal Guard co.???? > Any comments or idea’s greatly appreciated. > Thanks BRMGLD

Well, if you can install them yourself, you can get "crafrtsman brand" vinyl replacement widows at Home Depot. They are a good window, I installed ten (10) of them. If you must have them installed for you, ask the HD consultant to send someone out for estimate, or if you measure them yourself they can give you an estimate right there. In any case don’t hire a window company, it’ll cost 3 times as much…

We went to Home Depot. We purchased 21 Windows, and had them installed, Total cost was less than $ 4000. The Windows are good quality.

Perception of quality is relative. Someone posted that they got 21 windows installed for $4,000 ($190 each) and they were "of good quality". Then how big were the little portholes? A good window of significant size costs more than that for materials alone. Thermal chacteristics can be much more critical in Minnesota than Florida, etc. I am very negative on vinyl windows. I do not find the material stable enough structurally and projecting flanges are prone to shattering in cold weather. Aluminum windows, in a cold climate, be very sure of the performance of their "thermal break"; I have used them and they are widely used on commercial buildings, but quality is a real issue there too. Personally I have vinyl clad wood right now, but there are other alternative. I would not use "Therno Guard Brand" because I think high marketing budget drives the price up past what the units are worth. But then some people think the Andersens, Pellas and Velux units I favor (for new construction) are the same, so to each there own. good luck -v.

Good thinking. Do you remember the breakdown in labor and material? Were the windows off the shelf or was it special ordered for an exact fit? Wow, that’s one way to safe big $$.

You’re so right. Windows, insulation and swimming pools don’t get much back from a sale, if at all. If he does live in the house for a long time what would the energy savings be? At lease 12 years for break even? Home Depot like your and the other poster suggested looks so much better. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Are you planning on living in your house for a long time? All the windows are special order. windows costed us about $ 2000, and the installation was about $2000. I saved $400 by getting the Home Depot charge card.(They will take 10% off when you use the card for the initial first time) I’m happy with the quality. The best way is to go to Home Depot, and look at all the different types which they have. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> We went to Home Depot. That is true if the owner faced with such maintenance i.e. windows/roof/furnace/….plans to remain in the home ‘forever’. However, for example, I needed to replace many windows in my current home but was unwilling to get the ‘better’ windows as I felt that this home might not be my home in a couple of years. Doug
