Question:
I am looking for a cheap source of open cell foam filters. Aquatic shop in my area wants about $32.00 for a pair of 1 foot by 1 foot by 2 inch pieces. Anyone have any prices and locations to get it?

Use "new" floor buffing machine pads, white is finest size. work as good or better than foam. — Ken Arnold, KenCo Fish & Supplies Pond and Aquarium fish, Shipping plants/fish etc. a specialty Imported & domestic Koi,Goldfish,Orandas, Tropicals, exotics, Piranhas etc.

When you use something like this, does anyone ever worry about "stuff" that might be in it, (like sizing in clothes) that may harm the fish. Do you prewash before putting it in the pond? Guess I’m just paranoid! Karen

I’ve never had a problem w/ them or the "blue" furnace filters and I have a lot more filters and fish than most to worry about.

Just was looking at this very product in a catalog last night. Here is a website for the company. www.aquatic-ecosytems.com Kathy Kathy 30acre and the gardening labrador girls, Rosie and Heidi. Zone 7, hot and sunny summers by the pond

Have you looked at the foam used for furnace humidifier drums? Only about 1" thick but seems to work well in my homebuilt pre-filter. It’s the only filter in my pond but the water is looking good with a limited fish load. Get it at any hardware. Luck Phil West

I went with www.aquatic-ecosystems.com open cell foam. I’m very happy with the 1" sheets. I bought a big roll, with shipping it was $200, but I should *never* have to replace it and it cleans totally. One ~ 2′X3′ sheets takes 3 minutes with the hose end sprayer and it fertilizes the lawn while you’re cleaning it. Started the filter up in March and have yet to touch the foam (pre-filter is vinyl screening and a pillow of 100% polyester fill). ~Keep ‘em Wet!~ jan/Tri-Cities WA Zone 7 Remove Z to e-mail See my ponds: http://home.earthlink.net/~alanjordan1/jjspond/index.html

Do they hold up well to being constant wet? $32 for 1′x1′x2" is outrageous, unless there is something special… What material is the foam? Urethane? Polyurethane? What density? Anyway, try a fabric store. Around here, I usually get my foam from Mill End Fabrics. Sometimes the discount department stores also have foam, see camping supplies. sdb — Do NOT send me unsolicited commercial e-mail (UCE)! Watch out for munged e-mail address. From Aquatic-Eco Systems <www.aquatic.eco.com> (the foam I use) Reticulated Filter Foam: 1" thick foam is true *fish grade* long life with pore size of 20 ppi (pores per inch). 2′X6′X1" is $25.25 each, if you buy 4 or more sheets. $26.85 each for less than 4 sheets. Fabric store foam and foam used for furnace filters, etc. are usually not as poreous and do not clean as easily as this stuff. Also, some foams have mold/mildew inhibitors and fabric foam may have fire retartants added. seems like a poly, kinda like green scrubby pads, colors determine density. black = coarse, red next finer, white red or white is best. Home Depot, $8 for 2 round, 19" x 1-1.5" > sdb > — > Do NOT send me unsolicited commercial e-mail (UCE)! > Watch out for munged e-mail address. > User should be sylvan and host is cyberhighway.net.

It’s _exactly_ like the green scrubby pads – but different density. Both are 3M "Scotch Brite". — * This message has been anti-spammed – sorry * My views aren’t my own…apparently they’ve been generated by software

I agree w/ the scrubbys’ but the "floor buffing pads" dont have anything on them. — Ken Arnold, KenCo Fish & Supplies Pond and Aquarium fish, Shipping plants/fish etc. a specialty Imported & domestic Koi,Goldfish,Orandas, Tropicals, exotics, Piranhas etc.
