No Hoax – Virus Warning

Question:

>You might consider getting a software firewall, and if you have more then >one computer on a LAN and you can afford it, a router with a built in >firewall.

Since a firewall is built into it, WinXP Pro is also a choice. That, & using a switch will allow the use of both IP’s that most cable companies allot to each modem. The switch I use cost only $35. What do small routers cost nowadays?   Zero1

Response:

Hi Zero1,     I got a pretty good one for $CAN 135.00.  I haven’t moved to XP since it is a new release and one should wait for the first service package.  I stayed with win2000 for my software development. Peter

The last job I had, the IT fellow did that with about 5.  Engineering drawings take up massive space.  He was great at teaching me stuff so he could get his other job done.  Lord, what they expect people to do nowadays, huh?  So, he’d make sure I did all back up procedures (tapes off-site, etc.,), and usual maintenance.  At that point we really needed some updated software/hardware, but since our Branch was shutting down, they were cost cutting on us.  Girls at the other branches were shocked that I did some of the stuff I did.  "That’s not my job" they’d whine.  IT guys do that.  Well, some times I’d run the office alone as 4 people would be out on site for 3 or so days, so I had follow procedures set in place by the head office or they could not get billings done.  We never had a virus though. Since my nightmares in the summer with viruses, NO MORE.  I have nice AV on machine! I read a column in the paper recently that was actually published in an Ontario paper.  This guy was really putting down people who allow themselves to get viruses nowadays.  They all should be fired, etc.  They are so stupid, idiots.  How can they not figure it out.  How can they not know to never open an attachment.  And on and on.  Boy he was ruthless. Carrie ;-)

Hi Carrie,     Don’t be worried about learning things that are not in your job description.  That IT guy was setting you up to have a more secure future. Me Mum was a computer operator back in the 1950’s and she earned twice the salary or an Engineer.  I tease her now, she has a Pentium that she says she doesn’t understand, so I tell her that it is no different from the Comptomotron (sp?) she used back in the 1950’s only faster.     B.C. is in a sorry situation.  My parents live in British Columbia (I lived there for a few years) and they tell me there are only jobs for doctors.  Toronto is alive with jobs related to computers and you might like to connect to the newsgroup ont.jobs for a continual listing.  If you don’t like the urban setting but need to be close to the jobs you might consider Mississauga.  Jobs pop up in places like Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo, and Ottawa, but less frequently I think. I think it is way harsh to call victims of viruses idiots.  I have had nimda on my machine, but the autoprotect detected and deleted the infected file before it could activate.  Same with a Trojan horse.  I don’t believe I am an idiot, at least I try my best to minimize my idiotic behaviour. You might consider getting a software firewall, and if you have more then one computer on a LAN and you can afford it, a router with a built in firewall.  This is important to prevent hackers from entering your machines through the ports.  Some of these ports are open by default. Well that’s enough babbling at you.  Take care, Peter

I’ve actually never had a virus, I’m usually never even sent the ones I hear about.  I did get an email from my sister the other day that was infected, but it was something that had been discovered back in early Sept, so Norton caught it no problem.  My sister is bumming though. — Peace, Gina "Rat in a drain ditch, caught on a limb.   You know better but I know him. Hi SpaceBar,     Yes I live in London, Ontario.  I threw in the igloo part to tease you a bit (in a friendly way).  Norton’s seems to do a good job of stopping viruses at the e-mail account.  It then puts them in quarenteen.  But you are right, if the integrety of the virus checker can be destroyed by the virus then the virus can enter your system unchallenged.  I am always worried about viruses and trojen horses (which I guess are viruses too) since I run six machines on a LAN. Peter

too?  Dudley Doright guarding your border?  LOL  Were you watching Red Green and all his duct tape again? I’d never put a virus warning on the group if I had not already checked it out.  Someone took a real beating here for doing that one day. You’ve got Norton – From what I read that Goner virus was eating the Norton AV then causing havoc.  Norton man on TV was talking about it. At the NG alt.comp.virus, in one thread they were saying you should never need an AV.  HUH? You should just be updating constantly with patches and that should do it. So there are posters there that do not use AV at all.  Not in this house! We were spared here, however, no so with Nimda or Sircam.  But them, my AV was out of date.  We updated when we installed XP with McAfee.  All is calm now. Carrie ;-)

Gina.  I have a friend that sends me warnings also.  Not one he has send has been on a hoax list.  Thankfully.  He also sends me a lot of really disgusting links and jokes.  Where he gets those must be top secret.     I recently subscribed to a daily e-mail newsletter that provides information about the latest viruses.  Honestly, I cannot tell you whether it is good or bad; but if any of you would like to try it out (there is a opt-out feature) you can sign on at http://www.oxygen3.com . Peter
