Cat tree and older cats.

Question:

I asked my hubby to build one wich he will do next month.  I am just wondering, will my cats, 12 & 5 yr old, be attracted to it as kittens would be?  I only want to entertain them on the long winter nights, ’cause they already have permitted scratching areas.  Anyone has experience with this? I bought my mom’s cats (14 yrs. old) a tree and they use it all the time. They had never had one before. Put it by a window and your cats will love it. Karen

Response:

My cats are 7 & 8 years old & love their cat tree.  Placement of the cat tree is crucial, though, since they want to be where they are in the middle of everything & can see their people & everything that’s going on.  The other thing that’s crucial is that it needs to have a very stable base.  I bought one that’s sort of tippy that didn’t get used at all that I wound up getting rid of. The other thing about this cat tree that my cats like is that the platforms on it are curved, not flat, so they can sleep on it without rolling off. They don’t really play with it like kittens would but they seem to really appreciate having more places to be.  Also, they do use it as a scratching post, both the carpeted areas and the sisal (rope) wrapped areas. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >I asked my hubby to build one wich he will do next month.  I am just >wondering, will my cats, 12 & 5 yr old, be attracted to it as kittens would >be?

Response:

My cats (11 and 12 years old) still love their cat tree even though they are sick of most of their "toys".  It is next to the window and wall unit so they can get on top of the wall unit.  One of them loves to go up there every evening for a nap. Barb

Response:

I appreciate the tips, thanks :-) The way my hubby builds things it will probably take three strong men to move the tree around so I am not worried about stability.  The emplacement is a concern though.  I have a room filled with windows but its not very close to major activity in the house, but its still the best place for it in the house.  Good thinking for the curved platforms. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> My cats are 7 & 8 years old & love their cat tree.  Placement of the cat tree > is crucial, though, since they want to be where they are in the middle of > everything & can see their people & everything that’s going on.  The other > thing that’s crucial is that it needs to have a very stable base.  I bought one > that’s sort of tippy that didn’t get used at all that I wound up getting rid > of. > The other thing about this cat tree that my cats like is that the platforms on > it are curved, not flat, so they can sleep on it without rolling off. > They don’t really play with it like kittens would but they seem to really > appreciate having more places to be.  Also, they do use it as a scratching > post, both the carpeted areas and the sisal (rope) wrapped areas.

Response:

Definitely have the cat tree built!  My cats have always had good spots for looking out the windows, but when I got a cat tree, they were ecstatic.  My 15-year-old took over the top perch.  It is now occupied by a 13-year-old, and I expect her to love it as long as she can reach it.  That’s a consideration, btw.  Leaps are fine, but short hops are sometimes easier for the old ones. Have fun! Daria Timing is everything.

If you want to build something all your cats will absolutely *love*, build high-level walkways: http://maxshouse.com/Environmental_Enrichment/high-level_walkways.htm Phil

Years ago, I saw a video of some guy’s house and he had built walkways about 24" down from the ceiling, on the wall. They actually went from room to room with cat size holes in the wall. That’s got to be the coolest thing I ever saw.

Isn’t it awesome? :) )  I came across that book in the local Chapters store a few years back.  I’d love to do something like that for my guys, but in this house at least I’ll have to settle for something a little less.  Was going to try making a "cat run" outside with a ramp and kitty door attached to the living room window, but it kind of fell by the wayside this year along with all the other home improvements that never got done.  Not exactly sure how to go about doing something like that anyway (the cat run, that is)….Phil, do you have any ideas/links on this if you’re reading this post? Nothing too huge – just somewhere they could sit in the fresh air and grass to watch the birds with areas in the sun and in the shade.  Maybe no more than 5′ (give or take) out from the house (or window, where the cat door would be), maybe 10-15′ in length and about 4′ high?  I don’t know exactly how I’d work this, but since I live out in the sticks with very few neighbours, I’d like to be able to secure the window when I go out. Thanks for any ideas, Cindi (whose cats would also thank you too if they knew what I was planning..<g>)
