I am looking to go to Cozumel.  Can anyone recomend a good hotel. Looking for a nice beach- one you don’t have to jump in to get into the water with good snorkeling. Fiesta Americana? Presidente? Cozumel Reef? other? What’s the cab-fare into town? Is the food/drinks expensive?

Response:

We were in Cozumel on our cruise so I don’t know much about hotels, food, drinks, although be sure & go to CARLO’S & CHARLIES.  Fun drinks & dancing!  It’s especially fun when the ships are in port! While we were there, we snorkeled with a company called FURY.  They are a very good outfit.  On our next cruise, we snorkeled with the same company at Key West, there too they run a good tour company. Anyway, they take you on a Catamaran to a secluded placed to snorkel & the snorkeling is excellent.  After that, they take you to a private beach where there’s rafts, air mattresses, volley ball, canoes AND all the beer or rum punch you can drink (all is included in the snorkeling package tour price). They are a great company & I recommend a snorkeling tour with them.

Well, I’d definitley consider Chankanaab park, and go to the little shops there.  Not sure about San Miguel, though.  The shops seemed overpriced and touristy. BUT I spent a week driving around the Yucatan, and was not on a cruise ship.  I would not shop in Cozumel, given the option of shopping in Merida, BUT a cruise ship passenger does not have that option, so I am probably full of hot air.  I would suspect that coz is better than cancun in that way. Cozumel is a quaint wonderful place.  Chankanaab park is a taxi ride away and very beautiful…. it’s supposedly known for it’s great snorkeling, however I think that aspect is overrated.  I thought shopping was fun, you won’t exactly find a great bargain, but I loved it. The east side of the island is really too far away for you to visit from the cruise ship.  It is very beautiful, and the current and waves are very rough, It is sparsely populated, with really nothing to do but take in the scenery.  If you rent a jeep, you’ll be living dangerously….. Taxi’s are quite reasonable,  and the drivers friendly. Enjoy! The locals seemed perfectly nice, though they tend to have their own social activities and do not interact much with tourists. As for women, don’t expect much. Even the topless beach on the east side of the island, while very nice, did not have any hotties when I was there.

Been there twice and from what I remember it should be fine for the disabled. They have a nice big pool and the beach is across the street and it does have elevators. I would not what to push someone in a wheelchair all the way to town too many times, its about a 20 minute walk and when I was there last (Nov 1998) there was a lot of construction going on and the sidewalks were a mess. What’s a nice hotel in Cozumel for a family of three (two adults and 3 year old)?  My husband wants to go for the diving and I just love the beach but from what I’ve heard Cozumel’s beaches aren’t the same as the beaches in Cancun.  I really want my husband to get his dive fix, but I’d like to be able to enjoy the vacation with our little girl.  Any suggestions?  My husband is looking at the Iberostar Cozumel and the Presidente Intercontinental, but we know nothing about these. Thanks in advance! Natalie

Natalie, Consider staying across the way at Playa del Carmen or one of the other areas on the mainland. You’ll have a lot nicer beaches plus more stuff to do during the day, and a better variety of places to stay. Cozumel has become overrun with cruise ships. Your hubby can still dive the same reefs, and the dive shops in PdC are excellent.

Depending on what time of year you go, you should be able to get inexpensive charter flights out of Miami from a few different companies.  A travel agent would be a good source of info on this. Make sure you have one that is willing to make recommendations about which charters are reputable and which have unknown reliability.  You can get some very good hotel+air packages from these companies too. It’s a fairly short flight but I forget the specific time. Christine

It’s about an hour flight from Miami to Cancun, then about 15 -20 minutes to Cozumel as the big jets can’t land there, you go by feeder planes, kind of the what the regionals fly here, United, AreoCozumel, AreoCaribe, etc, about every hour.

Richard… I am not sure what you mean by "big jets".   However, I think that you will find both scheduled and charter jets carrying many passengers, land and take off from the Cozumel air port every day.  For example… In December, I will be flying from Houston directly to Cozumel on Continental Flight #251. The air craft will be a Boeing 737-300.   — Howard Reid … Living in Louisville, Kentucky But dreaming of Cozumel.   Check out my Cozumel Retirement page at: <http://www.geocities.com/TheTropics/4117>

I had a great time in Cozumel – it was my first trip to Mexico and the Caribbean – first try snorkeling, etc. Definitely do snorkel! Even if you only go into waist high water, you see amazing things. (And the deeper the better!) I bought equipment at home before going, and I’m glad. It’s not expensive to rent there, but it’s by the hour, which limits you some. Having your own stuff means you can pop in for 20 mins, see some underwater sights, hop back to the beach, lay in the sun and dry off, order a Dos Equis and have it delivered to you without ever getting up (if your hotel provides such a service, of course), then go back to snorkeling when you feel like it. (Actually, that pretty much described my whole week on the island!) Also, buying gear means you can be sure to get a mask that fits you well, which will make the experience much better. I spent every night near the main plaza, seeking out small restaurants, and was never disappointed. Also took a day trip to the Tulum runs on the mainland, which was cool, and drove to the "other" side of the island, which is a must. You’ll hit a few beaches as you go, but eventually just peer out over turquoise water crashing against the coral shore. Remarkable sight! If you want almost certain privacy, venture onto the dirt road marked "don’t drive here" (provided you’ve got a jeep-type vehicle) and pull off onto a beach area. But try to hit it early enough so you can make it in and out again in the light. It would be pretty tough to navigate at night I think. We had to turn around before hitting the lighthouse that was supposed to be at the end of the road. We also drove around the residential areas of the island some, which I found very interesting. So have fun. And be sure to order at least one plate of fajitas at Ernesto’s!

Plaza Las Glorias is our very favorite hotel on Cozumel. We’ve been going to Cozumel for almost 20 years, and ever since we stayed at Plaza Las Glorias, we always stayed there….that is,….until we bought our own house there a year ago.  Plaza Las Glorias stays booked up quite a bit, so good luck getting a room. You’ll love it.  Close enough to walk to town, a balcony and ocean view from every room, safe in each room, drinkable water in the taps, a wet bar and small frig in each room, satellite TV.  Really a great place. Any questions about Cozumel, I’ll be happy to try and answer them. Our next trip is 5/19. Kathy http://www.tyler.net/topaz

Robert, I haven’t personally stayed at Plaza las Glorias, but I’ve gone to a couple of their time share presentations and I’ve snorkeled off their dock. The room we saw was two stories, lots of glass windows looking out at the ocean. I think it had a jacuzzi on the patio. Full kitchen, too, if I’m not mistaken. Of course, the time share properties are probably a little nicer than the regular rooms, but I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. It’s relatively close to town — about a 10-minute walk (but even that can sometimes be a killer when it’s 90 degrees and 100% humidity). On really hot days, it might be worth $1 (I’m guessing) to take a taxi. Pick up the latest Fodor’s guide to Cancun and Cozumel ($15). It has a lot of useful information about the island. Of course, if you have specific questions, feel free to e-mail me (otherwise I’d use up all the bandwidth on this board telling you what I know). Michelle

I don’t remember exactly how many floors PLG has, but I think 3 or 4. We were on the top one, on a corner, with a wraparound patio and jacuzzi on the patio.  We didn’t have a full kitchen, just a refrigerator, coffee maker and microwave as I recall.  I loved the place, but don’t go to a time share presentation if you can avoid it–the only higher pressure I’ve encountered was at the Diamond.

There is snorkeling along the coast off any property in the hotel zone of the island…you can put off anywhere. All properties seem to have little ladders or coral ledges/sunning platforms from which you can snorkel. My fave property is Plaza las Glorias, cause it’s right on water, fine for snorkeling, has a small diveboat pier, and also is within walking distance of Cozumel’s friendly little town/main square. Have fun, and email me privately if you want more recommendations! Carol
