Question:
My wife and I are planning the kitchen for our new house. We really like the appearance of stainless steel appliances, but are concerned about the work to keep them clean. Neither of us has ever lived in a house with stainless, so no experience. Do fingerprints show very badly on them? Do you have to wipe them down often to keep marks off? Are there various grades or finishes? Are there any other issues with the stainless surfaces? Thanks! And am looking forward to replies.

My opinion is – if you have kids, you likely will have trouble keeping SS appliances looking clean. If it’s just you and your wife, it shouldn’t be a problem. We have no kids, and keeping our SS appliances looking good is no problem at all. When getting ready to remodel our kitchen, we went on a tour of "Homes For Sale" during open house on older homes. After seeing stainless (stained) in several kitchens that had been used for a year or longer, we went back with white. Beats the pink we had, and think it will beat the smugged stainless. — http://homepages.go.com/~tomjanis/ http://homepages.go.com/~aviontravelcade/ Before you buy.

We have 4 children and the stainless is not a problem. Now if I could just get them to wipe the COUNTERS…. I lean on them and my sleeve sticks. Then again we own a restaurant that has a lot of stainless so maybe we are just used to it. -v.

We had a stainless steel cooktop and for years we struggled to keep it clean, and then someone told us to wipe it over with glycerine – worked like magic. I’ve also heard that vinegar works too but cannot confirm. Fran

Besides finger prints… the stainless used in residential appliances also scratches easily, and may discolor around areas that get hot (oven , cooktop). – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> My wife and I are planning the kitchen for our new house. I wouldn’t do a stainless range/cooktop, but I have a stainless fridge that I think is beautiful. I wish I had gone with a stainless microwave and ovens as well. Fingerprints on those appliances are really only a problem if you have kids (I have a 3-year old). You need to use a special stainless-steel cleaner, available most anywhere cleaning supplies are sold. It’s not any harder to use than windex (but to be honest I’ve only cleaned the fridge a couple times myself). I think granite counters and stainless appliances look great together. –Neil

yeah, but you can polish the scratches out…. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Besides finger prints… the stainless used in residential appliances > also scratches easily, and may discolor around areas that get hot > (oven , cooktop). > My wife and I are planning the kitchen for our new house. it’s hard to polish scratches out of brushed stainless, which is what domestic appliances are going to be made of. the only way to get rid of the scratches is to "polish" them with the proper grit emory cloth, especially if they are deep. drag a cast iron skillet across the front of one and see how well it polishes out. sorry, but i see it all the time. i’ve even seen scratches made with a fingernail run against the grain. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > yeah, but you can polish the scratches out…. > Besides finger prints… the stainless used in residential appliances > also scratches easily, and may discolor around areas that get hot > (oven , cooktop). >> My wife and I are planning the kitchen for our new house. yeah, but….this is sort of the same arguement against wood floors. the "wear and tear" adds charm….or something like that. if that wasn’t the case, everyone would have laminate floors installed. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > it’s hard to polish scratches out of brushed stainless, which is what > domestic appliances are going to be made of. the only way to get rid of > the scratches is to "polish" them with the proper grit emory cloth, > especially if they are deep. drag a cast iron skillet across the front > of one and see how well it polishes out. sorry, but i see it all the > time. i’ve even seen scratches made with a fingernail run against the > grain. > yeah, but you can polish the scratches out…. > > Besides finger prints… the stainless used in residential > appliances > > also scratches easily, and may discolor around areas that get hot > > (oven , cooktop). > >> My wife and I are planning the kitchen for our new house.
