Need new fridge and stove

Question:

An ice maker makes ice cubes and fills up a storage tub with them. It is located in the freezer compartment. You need to run a cold water pipe to the ice maker.  So, if you need a plumber depends if someone has already run the pipe for you (look behind your current refridge), or if you can do simple plumbing yourself (like soldering).  If neither, then you need to hire someone to do it for you. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > What is an ice maker? wow, you must eat a lot if you open the fridge 20 or 30 times a day – just kidding. Thanks very much for your valuable info. My fridge and stove needs replacing.>>>> I have a ceramic top stove and I love it with a passion.  The temperatures stay more even through the heating cycles and it is so easy to keep clean.  One of the things I recommend you do is read carefully the maintenance booklet before you buy.  Since so many appliances are high tech these days, wierd odd ball things can happen where you have to call in a certified tech.  Make darned sure that there are certified techs (and lots of them) in your area.  My stove gave me a "fault" and it turned out there were no tech in a fairly large town!  It would not permit me to use the oven, but after about a month of trying to get someone to look at it, it suddenly started working again.  <sigh>  BTW, it is an Amana.  Also look at the details of it.  Make sure the drawer is not flimsy, and that certain things that have to be replaced over time are owner friendly.

Or very little, and one keeps re-opening up the fridge in the hopes that something new and appealing will be found.  :) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > wow, you must eat a lot if you open the fridge 20 or 30 times a day – just > kidding. Thanks very much for your valuable info. J.

LOL – yes, it sure sounds funny, doesn’t it?  Of course it is all dependent on your lifestyle, like whether you do a lot of food prep and cooking, work from home several days a week, keep bottled water and other beverages refridgerated for drinking, and have multiple people in your household.  It can add up rather quickly. My parents have a freezer-on-the-bottom and while they seem to enjoy it, I really don’t like it! I find myself almost sitting on the floor when I need to search for something.  To my mind there’s nothing convenient about it at all – don’t know how my father manages. I’m sure some of the stuff’s been in there since Day 1 and will never see the light of day again. > As far as stove is concerned, it has to be self cleaning and electric with the > rings all making a flat surface (hope I explained this right).

My parents also recently purchased a glass-top stove with a self-cleaning oven – they like it alot (the burners hit up INSTANTLY), but have to be really, really careful about what pots/pans you use (no LeCreuset cookware, for example) and what it’s cleaned with (no harsh chemicals or abrasives of any kind). (As an aside, however, while I may not like their purchases, it’s worked out BEAUTIFULLY for me as I was the recipient of their previously owned, barely used, practically brand new fridge & stove when I moved into my new house – as well as the Le Creuset dutch oven I’d always loved.)

I agree on the Whirlpool family of appliances (includes KitchenAid and some Kenmore/Kenmore Elites).  I have a Kenmore Elite dishwasher that works wonderfully well.  And I have a KitchenAid bottom freezer fridge which I love.  The shelves are movable (door shelves too) and some of them extend (slide out) for easier reaching to the back.  The freezer baskets slide out, making it easier to get to stuff in them as well.  I have read that bottom-freezers are just about equal in energy efficiency as top-freezer models.  Even if they are not, the extra money is worth the convenience alone to me.  I might open the freezer once or twice a day, but I open the fridge door maybe 20 or 30 times a day.  Having everything at eye and arm level makes a difference for me.  Of course this is only my opinion, your mileage may vary. For my money, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, and those Kenmore appliances made by Whirlpool are hard to beat for value and reliability at present. If you have a Sears nearby that gives good service, that is a plus; not all of them do. I prefer top-freezer styles. I dislike side-by-side styles because the design is narrow and wastes space; I dislike bottom-freezer styles because the whole heavy freezer works and contents has to be pulled out to get at the freezer compartment. YMMV. An ice maker, surprisingly enough, makes ice. Very convenient if you go through a lot of ice in the summer. It can be noisy, especially when the ice tray is empty. It can be installed do-it-yourself if you are handy and there is a cold water tap close by. The glass-top stoves are elegant and not as hard to keep clean as one would think. They require pans that are very flat on the bottom and won’t scratch the glass; RevereWare works fine, but cast iron, for example, is out. — Chris Green
