Stop going on the cooker!!

Question:

Our cats love jumping up – where they are not supposed to! Luckily they have come to no harm yet, but I worry that one day if we let our guard down… they keep going on the cooker and worktops in the kitchen, and another annoying habit is going on the computer keyboard and in the bath – they wandered out with our plug the other day!!!! But if you try to put them in the bath without it being of their own accord, they wont have it!!!!! (Which leads me to another point -should I bathe them or leave them to lick themselves clean?). Any way I can defer them from where they shouldnt go?! Gemz http://getit.at/euphoria "Ear all, see all, say nowt. Eat all, sup all, pay nowt. And if tha does owt fer nowt, allus do it for thissen. And finally here’s to mi mother’s son, mi wife’s ‘usband and not forgettin’ missen."

You need to choose your battles. It’s essential that your cats are taught not to get on the stove, for their safety and yours. Enforce this rule with a stern "down" command as you quickly remove the cat every single time.  If necessary, emphasize the command with a spray of water.  Watch for them to eye the stove deciding whether to jump up, and instantly say "down" before they do. They will eventually learn.  As for countertops, I’ve chosen one small unused area where our two may sit and watch me work (or salivate over whatever I’m preparing), and do not allow them on the other areas of the counters.  Their reward for sitting patiently is a *tiny* taste of our tuna, bacon, or whatever–after I’m finished preparing it–on a plate on the floor.   Bathtubs, computer keyboards, etc., are not worth fighting over. Buy a few spare tub plugs (or give the cats their own to play with), warn your e-mail friends that there may be some indecipherable lines in your messages, and accept the fact that cats are curious and playful creatures who occasionally do annoying as well as cute things. P.S.  It might help to get them a floor-to-ceiling cat tree to climb if they like to be up in high places.
