Question:
We just bought a new home and have to purchase a washer and dryer. I’ve read the Consumer Reports et al. However, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what features I should definitely include, etc. Also, we have spoken with the rep who is suppling the builder with our other appliances, and she said she’d get us a Kenmore washer and dryer for commerical cost if we wanted (and no delivery fee). We checked around and the prices she gave us do seem to be about $75 less than the sale prices we found at Sears. It sounds like a good deal to us–anyone else have other experiences? Thanks, Maria

Only you can know what features you will need on your washer. The less you get on the console the less it will cost. Buy what you know you will use, save your money for something else. lawn mower?? — – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> We just bought a new home and have to purchase a washer and dryer. I find for all items buy the middle of the line, most cars and products have a low end, middle and high end model. The low end is for people who just can not pay enough but need something new. The middle has all the basic features most people use and is always the best value in features and quality for the money. The high end is the luxury model for people with money to spare and who want all they can get, it has everything the middle model has plus about 10% more features for 20% to 30% more money. Find the brand you like best and buy the middle model. I like Whirlpool brands and have in the last 3 years purchased a refrigerator, washer and dish washer middle brand Whirlpool. Really check out the efficiency rating. A W/D that is $100 less may waste an extra $20-50 dollars a year in electric and water costs, depending on how much you pay for those utilities. Our whole house is on electric, with vaulted ceilings and forced air (yuck!!!!). For us, we had to spend the extra to get an efficent one, but it’s been completely worth it. We got a front loader and after all the rebates, sales and tax breaks we got, the washer only ended up costing us $110 more, but the dryer was cheap! Only $244 for it and our electric and water usage was down after two months of having it put in. We figure with the saved electric and water and the fact that we use less detergent as well, it’s been worth it to us.
