Question:
Is this something I can do myself, or do I need to get someone in? I asked at Best Buy and they said they won’t install gas dryers for liability reasons. I’m going to comparison shop at Sears and ask if they do the installation. I’ll probably be getting a Frigidaire Gallery front-loading washer with its associated dryer, if that makes any difference. It’s a new house and I’d rather not have it burn down while drying its first load of washing! Thanks! — Cheers, Graham Perks.

Sears won’t do it either. They’ll tell you to contact the gas co or a plumber. Either way, it’ll cost you about $40+ to have someone do a 5 minute job. I did mine myself and it was pretty easy. After you get all the fittings, use some teflon tape and tighten everything up. Turn on the gas and use some soapy water to check for leaks. No bubbles = no problem.

: Is this something I can do myself, or do I need to get someone in? What would be involved in this installation? Do you need to run a gas line to the dryer location? Do you have gas service or a propane tank? If you need to run a gas line, see what the supplier charges (if anything) to do so. Unless you’re quite confident in your abilities, you probably shouldn’t try it. The connections need to be super-tight, and then they need to be checked for leaks before using the appliance. Hooking up the appliance requires the same care. : I asked at Best Buy and they said they won’t install gas dryers for : liability reasons. In my case, I ran the gas line and let my supplier tighten it and check for leaks. I was able to persuade them to hook up my dryer, too. : I’ll probably be getting a Frigidaire Gallery front-loading washer with : its associated dryer, if that makes any difference. : It’s a new house and I’d rather not have it burn down while drying its : first load of washing! Actually, it might be more likely to blow up. Not that either is a pleasant prospect! Paul Havemann, "See, it’s not the coffee that’s the problem for me, it’s those damned styrofoam cups. Other people look at me strange the first time they see me finish one off, but I say, if you’re going to enjoy a cup of coffee, you might as well get the whole experience."

If you do it yourself, do not reuse the flexible connector. For one, they’ve changed some of the designs to eliminate a failure mode, so you want the new design. Secondly, they can fail after being bent enough times. Topher Eliot Visit the house maintenance archive at http://www.geocities.com/heartland/7400
