What kind of $ to fix leaking oil from GE clothes washer?

Question:

>We have a pair of washer/dryer from GE that have served us well since ‘93. >In the last year the washer started leaking tranny oil after violent loads >(:-)). No sweat then, it’s vinyl flooring, mop the oil off. It’s a $400 >(new, 1993) unit. We’re moving to a very nice home with all tile laundry >room and I am concerned that it needs fixing. If it’s $150-200 max I don’t >mind it if it is going to keep the unit running for another year or three, >but if it’s more than that there’s no point throwing good money after bad… >It *is* a transmission that leaks as far as we know. >Any idea on cost estimates?

If it’s the older GE design (which I think it is, pump mounted above motor and clutch), you can probably get a factory rebuilt transmission for between $125-150. They’re not usually that hard to replace and if the rest of the machine is in pretty good shape (not rusting, clutch and motor not noisy) it IMO is likely worth while repairing it to last some years yet.
