Question:
It is winter again in Minneapolis and the air is very dry. I personally use oil and lotion to keep my skin from drying out, but what about my macaw? We do have a humidifier in another room, and I try to take him/her into the shower every couple of weeks. I am worried that this might not be enough. Is there specific symptoms to look for, if a macaw is getting too dry of skin? Maybe he will squak a little less if there is adequate moisture in the air (wishfull thinking). Lee Globus

Hi Lee. I was just going to post a similar question. About the time that furnace season began (which is when my dry skin starts too), my bird’s feet started looking a little dry. This will be my first full winter with a bird, so I don’t know whether this is normal/seasonal or what. There is a humidifier attached to the furnace, but I can’t see any sign that it works (water feed drips when turned on). Is it safe to rub something on the little toes, like mineraloil or some such?
